Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
1. What does a lactation consultant do?
A lactation consultant provides expert guidance on breastfeeding, pumping, milk supply, latch, positioning, and newborn feeding. We help you overcome challenges, answer questions, and create a plan that supports your feeding goals.
2. Do I need a lactation consultation?
If you are experiencing pain, latch issues, supply concerns, or simply want reassurance that things are going well, a consultation can be incredibly helpful. Many parents schedule a visit before problems arise for peace of mind.
3. Can you help even if I’m not breastfeeding exclusively?
Absolutely. We support ALL feeding goals – breastfeeding, pumping, combination feeding, chestfeeding, or bottle-feeding breast milk.
4. When should I schedule a visit?
Prenatal visits can be booked anytime during pregnancy. Postpartum visits are most helpful within the first few days or weeks, but we support families at any stage.
5. Do you offer virtual consultations?
Yes! We offer telehealth visits for postpartum support, pumping help, latch assessments (as appropriate), and follow-up care.
6. How long is a typical appointment?
Most initial consultations last 60-90 minutes, allowing plenty of time for assessment, feeding support, and questions.
7. Can my partner or support person join?
Of course! We welcome partners and support persons – they are an important part of your breastfeeding journey.
8. What do I need to prepare for an in-home consultation?
Please provide a quiet, pet-free area, your feeding supplies (pillows, pump, bottles), and your baby’s usual feeding items. A comfortable spot for feeding is ideal.
9. Will you weigh my baby?
Yes – when included in your service, a baby weight check helps assess milk transfer and track feeding progress.
10. What if breastfeeding is painful?
Pain is a sign that something needs adjusting. We will assess latch, positioning, and possible causes, then help you make changes for more comfortable, effective feeding.
11. Can you help with low milk supply?
Yes. We evaluate your feeding routine, your baby’s milk transfer, your pumping technique, and possible contributing factors. Then create a personalized plan to support your supply.
12. Do you help with pumping and returning to work?
Absolutely. We can size your flanges, set up your pump, create a pumping schedule, and plan for bottle introduction or daycare feeding.
13. Is breastfeeding supposed to be hard?
Breastfeeding is natural, but it is a learned skill – for both parent and baby. Support can make a huge difference and you don’t have to struggle alone.
14. What if I’m feeling overwhelmed or unsure?
This is completely normal. You’re learning, healing, and adjusting. We provide clear guidance, and reassurance at every step.
15. Is formula or mixed feeding still supported?
Yes! We support all feeding choices without judgment. Our goal is to help you feel confident and informed, whatever path you choose.
